JOJO
Armed with a well deserved glass of wine in one hand and yet another deadline in the other, I feel ready to tackle this issue’s column which will mostly feature my new found home improvement skills. Yes, after dramatically falling from a great height off the property ladder back in 2009 I have finally managed, with the mammoth support of my husband, to clamber back on. Unlike our previous property which we had to sell at a loss due to the shocking revelation that we had bought an amazing house but, on a terrible street, this time I truly feel that we have found somewhere to settle and finally call home.
Over the last 2 months we have been painstakingly modernising a property stuck in the 1950’s, breathing new life into it and bringing it into the 21st century. This house needed everything doing to it! Walls knocking down, rewiring, new windows, damp proofing, new kitchen, new bathroom, the whole schboodle (is ‘schboodle’ even a word? I think it should be ‘caboodle’ – ah well.) And now for the first time since the house was built in 1925 the property now has central heating. This is thanks to my very talented other half, Jacob who trained as a plumber a few years back, thus saving us an absolute fortune! It is so hard for first time buyers to get on the property ladder, but if you can save like a good un’ it’s well worth doing as there are some bargains to be had. We bought a house lost in a time warp but now it is starting to resemble something out of a glossy magazine. That won’t last, once I move in with all my nonk and clutter, and then of course we have a 5 year old who doesn’t travel light. No doubt I’ll be cursing him for leaving bits of Lego around!
It hasn’t all been sanding, stripping, caulking and painting. I have managed to do a couple of relaxing things of late including going to the Turkish Baths in Harrogate for a very good friend’s birthday. I can’t believe it took me so long to check out the Harrogate Baths! I always wanted to go but never got round to it. Now I think I’d like to go every couple of months. It was a ladies only night and we got into the mood by sipping some green tea (full of antioxidants) in the serene reception, but nothing can quite prepare you for how sumptuous and tranquil this place is. The historic building oozes glamour and is pure drama. It also maintains most of its original features including actual wooden Thomas Crapper toilets in the changing area. For those of you who have never experienced a Turkish bath, it’s basically exposing your body to extreme temperatures of both hot and cold. The ice cold plunge pool is scary at first but most invigorating. There are lots of areas to chill, relax or chat quietly with friends and it made a welcome change from going out to a bustling bar for birthday drinks. Me and my girls spent a good 3 hours in there and I cannot wait to go back! Think I’ll take my hubby there next as a treat for all the hard work he’s done at the house. They do single sex days and mixed days so make sure you go to the website to check, and if I was you I would book in advance to guarantee entry.
It’s the dreaded 6 week holiday, a time feared and dreaded by most working parents. Except teachers, as they have the holiday too so are able to take care of their own kids. That’s not a dig by the way, teachers work really hard and I am full of admiration and respect for anyone who goes into teaching and does it well. But how do you entertain your kids for that long? Get other people to take care of them? Well you may have to rely on family and friends, but if you do get enough time off from work to enjoy the odd day out can I thoroughly recommend Harewood House www.harewood.org. I recently went there with Adam O’Neill who does our ‘drivetime’ show here on Capital and we had a marvellous time exploring the house and gardens. Unfortunately, we forgot to go below the house to check out how the other half lived, which I will do on my return. It’s wonderful place and has plenty going on; a grand historical house, kids play areas, a lake, bird garden, including penguins and flamingos. My favourite part is the specialist gardens, especially the Himalayan garden and Cascade. Its beauty is overwhelming and I could have stayed there for hours blissfully dreaming the day away, but my son was more interested in climbing and going on the zip wire. Entrance prices vary as you can purchase a ticket for the grounds only or a full ticket which includes a tour of the house. It’s well worth a visit. Staying on a garden and outdoor tip – have you checked out the gardens at Roundhay Park? The winning canal lock garden from Chelsea flower show is on display alongside a couple of other previous garden entries. The canal gardens by Tropical World have been massively improved since my last visit and these gardens are free to have a gander. There is a small fee to go into Tropical World, which is great on a wet, cold day as it is reminiscent of a tropical climate. The park itself is excellent to yomp around with lots of open space, woodland, lakes and a folly in the form of small castle. Go on, get out there and have some fresh air. Ooo – I must give a cheeky mention to Meanwood Urban Farm, a favourite of mine. A small donation of £1 gains you entry into this community farm where you can meet the animals including donkeys, pigs and goats. The kids love it!
And finally, just one or two other things before I wrap up. I loved hosting the Leeds’ Bar and Club awards with Hirsty. Well done to all the nominees and winners, especially the legend that is Dave Beer, who received the ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ for his services to the Leeds clubbing scene. Well deserved methinks. Also - ‘Happy Birthday’ to Birds Yard, who have recently celebrated their 1st birthday. The shop is on 3 floors, on Kirkgate, opposite the Duck and Drake pub and is a haven for one off vintage garments and so much more. In addition the Queen of Fashion - Lisa Jayne Dann has recently opened up her first boutique on the top floor, so please make an effort to call in as shops as unique and wonderful as this need our continued support.
That’s it for me – catch you next time and if you need a JoJo fix you can find me on Capital on Hirsty’s Daily Dose 6am – 10am every week day morning when you wake up! xx

I may have mentioned in the past how I have a great admiration and interest in all things fashion. Well, word must have got out, as over the past month I’ve hosted 2 fashion events and even DJ’d at another. Yes, I do still occasionally spin some tunes if requested, and I was more than happy to play some choice cuts at a VIP preview of this years spring/summer collection at Whistles in the Victoria Quarter. It was even attended by a true fashionista, Grazia magazines, Polly Vernon - who gave a talk about this season’s key looks and offered expert style advice too. I was content just spinning my tunes and eating the delicious canapés (I had not had my tea).
Then something made me gasp and I was a little taken aback by this year’s ‘must have item’, which is a pair of pastel coloured jeans. Pink to be precise. Weirdly, only that morning, before the event I had been blathering on the radio like I always do and happened to mention how I met up with my Mum to take her out for the day and how she was outrageously wearing ‘pink jeans’. I must admit that I did take the mick a bit, I told her she carried it off, but thought that the look would never catch on. So imagine my surprise when the first item modelled was pink jeans! Sorry Mum, I take everything back. What do I know? You are obviously a fashion leader. Checkout the light weight leather jackets in store….I’ve got my eye on one of those cheeky numbers!
Leeds has a lot going on fashion wise and as a city we have so much to shout about. The likes of James Steward and Lisa Jayne Dann are both local ambassadors from Leeds working on an international level. James is the couture king and has designed dresses for the rich and famous, like Kylie Minogue and Victoria Beckham. Only last year James and Lisa represented Leeds during Vancouver’s fashion week and became the first ever British designers to grace the Canadian catwalk attracting the attention of the global media. With this in mind I was thrilled to play host at ‘Muse’, a one off fashion party held at The Loft last month and supported by Leeds Marketing. On the catwalk alongside collections from Lisa and James were clothes from Birds Yard, Ringlit and Fashion Pony. It was a celebration of many people’s hard work and dedication in the mediums of fashion, art and music. Representing the art front were Nicolas Dixon and Mikey Brain of The Dick Brain Collective. They are 2 Leeds artists on the up and they were doing their thing which is live art, live painting in the courtyard. They also exhibited many pieces of art and if you are into your paintings and fancy something really hip and very much of its time, then I’d recommend you snap up some of their work. Thankfully it wasn’t raining and was a cool added touch to the proceedings. It was on this very night that I had the pleasure of meeting the queen of Leeds fashion, Lisa Jayne Dann for the very first time. I instantly took a liking to her and her clothes are simply stunning. Don’t take my word for it, if you want to see for yourself then just go to the top floor of Birds Yard, Kirkgate and check out her new self styled boutique. It is pure class and another fantastic addition to the up and coming independent fashion scene in Leeds. Ps – Lisa, if you are reading this can I please borrow a dress for when I host the Leeds Bar and club awards later this year? Loving your work!
As I continue my fashion overload I was given the honour of hosting an event at Leeds Town Hall called Passion for Fashion, raising money for the Lord Mayors charities. What a venue and what a night! Organised by Leeds housing association, this was the night, the climax in which about 70 people between the ages of 14 and 65 got to feel like supermodels. After a series of workshops working with 3 established Leeds designers, each individual created a unique outfit to shimmy down the catwalk in. The initiative was designed to give unemployed people a boost in confidence, sewing skills and a glimpse of their true potential, all in front of an audience of over a thousand friends and family. It was even featured on Calendar! A great time was had by all and there was a real sense of achievement.
And finally, I would like to say a massive hello to all of the competitors taking part in the final of Leeds City College Has Talent. I had a wonderful time residing as ‘star’ judge on a brilliant panel and congratulations to the winner, Marion who simply rocked it! And finally – I recently bobbed into the Leeds City museum with my son. It’s a regular haunt for us on a rainy afternoon and it’s free! Make sure you go and see the Spice Girls exhibition. I loved it and again, it’s free! I couldn’t quite grasp the amount of merchandise they attached their names to or the size of their platform shoes. Had fun trying to explain to my 5 year old what the Spice Girls were. At least, next time someone says to him, “You’re Mummy sounds like Mel B”, he’ll know what they are on about. The exhibition is on show until July 2nd. Ciao for Now! xx

First up – important cake news! I have been given the honour of designing a cupcake for charity alongside some other faces from Leeds as part of The Cupcake Callab, initiated by the fabulous Bethanie Lunn! Throughout the week leading up to Easter you will be able to sample some individual cakes exclusively designed and available from the Sunshine Bakery on Harrogate Road in Chapel Allerton. As it’s all for a good cause, this is a guilt free indulgence and a win win situation, as all the proceeds of every specially designed cake will go directly to CLIC Sargent, a social care team based at the LGI who help children suffering with cancer.
I absolutely loved taking part in this scheme and to be honest got a bit carried away sketching my potential cupcakes. Not being the world’s greatest at drawing (GCSE D grade in Art) I was a little apprehensive to put pen to paper at first, but before I knew it I had 12 brilliant doodles including, my Bun Loving Criminal and Chicken in a basket – don’t ask. I finally opted to go with my Sausage and Mash design, which is basically a chocolate cupcake, topped with vanilla cream which signifies the mash potato, with half a dozen chocolate flavoured mini sausages sticking out. Then, and this is the best bit, sprinkled with lime flavoured pretend peas and then drizzled in chocolate sauce, which of course represents the gravy. I like the idea of something looking savoury but tasting sweet. I think my inspiration came from the great Heston Blumenthal and from my son, Rudi B whose favourite food is sausage. What better gift to give my son at Easter than his favourite food in the form a cake? If you would like to sample my cupcake it will be available to purchase from The Sunshine Bakery on Saturday the 23rd of April from 10.30am! Remember all profits from the sales of these cakes will go to charity and if you want to check out a picture of my effort and all of the other sketches from The Cupcake Collab, including one from fashion designer James Steward, then go to www.bethanielunn.com .
I’ve been saving up to get a deposit together for a house so have been unable to have the luxury of eating out or indeed eating, but now I have reached my deposit target I have treated myself and others to a couple of meals out at some of the fantastic establishments Leeds has to offer. One of which is Fazenda down by the Dark Arches. It was my hubby’s birthday and I wanted to treat him to a Brazilian. No - not that type! Fazenda is a unique type of dining experience. You simply pay a set price and have constant tableside service of different cuts meat brought to you and access to a well stocked salad bar. You even get your own set of tongs to retrieve your chosen meats as it carved at your tableside from giant skewers by Gaucho chefs. As a customer you can control the service by displaying a small green and red sided card. Just display the red side when you want the service from the chefs to stop and the green when you would like it to resume again. This is a carnivores dream and you may eat as little or as much as you can manage. Try the chicken hearts as they are a Brazilian delicacy.
Another place I have sampled is AM Kitchen & Bar. This is situated in the stunning Dyson Clock building within the Marriott Hotel on Lower Briggate and offers authentic Indian cuisine. The space has had many guises over the years; I think it has been a Thai restaurant, Chinese and even Malaysian and now Indian. If my memory serves me right it began life as a high class jewellers and clock maker back in 1875 and as a listed building it is expected to maintain its many exquisite features. It’s hard to imagine how the most glittery silver, Bollywood style wallpaper could possibly sit well with architecture from the 19th century, but somehow it works. The food is fresh and gorgeous -especially the lamb chops starter – slurp! AM Kitchen is a brilliant addition to Leeds’ restaurant arena and I think that Atif Malik, the man behind AM Kitchen, has done a brilliant job of combining traditional Indian food with one of the most historic buildings in Leeds. Thank you to my waiter Farooq who was both charming and attentive. In the words of Arnie – I’ll be back!
Well that’s it from me. I need to get my washing out on the line as it’s a beautiful day.
Roll on the summer! Xx

There has been an abundance of award ceremonies lately; Baftas, Grammys, Golden Globes, Brits and of course the Oscars. I didn’t manage to get my hands on any of these most coveted honours but, I did get a nomination from the ‘IBS’ – not irritable bowel syndrome. No, I got a nomination from the ‘International Board of Stupid’.
Why? I’ll tell you why. Have you ever been daft enough to go to the cash point, look at your printed statement, punch in the amount of money you want, only to walk away and leave the cash behind? No? Well I did! What a total ‘numpty’! The realisation of this brainless mistake only hit me around 2 hours after the event when I was rummaging through my handbag looking for my purse. Where was my money? I had the cash card. I had the printed statement, but where was my £50? That was my going out money, my taxi money. Then it suddenly dawned on me - I hadn’t picked it up. Oh great, just what I needed. Who can afford to lose fifty quid? I mourned my loss momentarily, I then moved into the next phase of grief - anger. My other half recommended that I ring my bank. I thought it was pretty pointless, but rang anyway in order to vent my anger and gain a little sympathy. To my absolute astonishment the lady on the end of the telephone was both helpful and sympathetic to my plight. She informed me that in today’s modern world this kind of thing happens all the time. Yes! I was not alone. Other people have had to pay this ‘stupid people tax’ too. I was told that as long as no one saw my cash and took it that it would have been sucked back into the machine and I would be able to claim it back. Interestingly, had I not called my bank the cash point would have simply made a profit as most cash machines do not have the intelligence to immediately refund unclaimed money back into your account. Feeling self satisfied armed with this new knowledge I quietly kept my fingers crossed and a week later – Bosh! I got my fifty quid back! Happy days! I felt I should share this information because you never know when it might happen to you. I bet you were wondering who did win this year’s International Board of Stupid award 2011. It was chap from Barnsley who burnt his house down trying to dry his socks in a microwave. What a div!
I’m spending more and more time on line these days, which is pretty laughable after my initial reluctance to join the Facebook generation, but I have now become a bit of an addict and have set up a fan page. Stop laughing! I love having virtual friends. You can have a good old natter with a massive group of people without having to leave the house or get a round in, bonus. If you want to join in the fun then look me up. Just search ‘The JoJo’ fan page on Facebook. Talking of being online have you ever heard of Fashion Pony? No? Well I hadn’t until I met one of the directors of the company at a recent party. We got talking about one of my favourite subjects, ‘dresses’ and next thing I know we are meeting up for lunch at Loch Fyne, an amazing fish restaurant on City Square. If you’ve never tried it, go. The food is excellent. As was the chocolate brownie dessert. They have a brilliant deal/menu for Mothers Day if you are reading this Rudi… (Rudi is my 4 year old son and yes he can read. Ok, maybe not that well, but his Dad can!) I digress… if you love clothes and you are looking for something a bit different to what’s available on the high street then go to www.fashionpony.co.uk
It’s a really accessible and user friendly website selling high end fashion and supporting a lot of Leeds based talented designers like, Lisa Jaynne Dann and Rebekah Murphy to name but two. The prices are pretty decent as well. But don’t take my word for it, see for yourself. And also keep an eye out for my modelling debut on the site. I’m going to be appearing in some seriously striking numbers very soon, can’t wait. I had better start practising my poses. Now where’s that copy of Vogue?

Capital is here!
Capital is here! And it is bigger, brasher and bolder than its predecessor. Well, if you saw our glitzy telly advert starring the likes of Rhianna, Black Eyed Peas and Usher, to name but a few, you’ll know that Capital means business. We are officially Yorkshires No.1 Hit Music Station and we want everyone to know about it. (if you’ve not seen the advert, check it out at www.capitalfm.com or even YouTube) So far we’ve given listeners chances to Cash in with Capital and Usher. Basically you could win tickets to see Usher in concert, and then he’d give you, Usher that is, a grand in cash backstage. Hello! Bonus! We’ve given away tickets to see Peter Kay at the Motor point arena in Sheffield in a swanky box, and if that wasn’t enough, if you go online right now you still have a chance of winning a trip to Mexico to see Lady Gaga!!!! I know – it’s immense. All you have to do is get online, create a Capital hotspot, and that prize could still be yours. Visit our website to get involved www.capitalfm.com
The line up at Capital has changed quite a bit and there are a few new faces on board or should I say new voices. You can still get me, Hirsty and Danny on Hirsty’s Daily Dose when you wake up, and Adam O’Neil, when you drive home. Adele Roberts and James Barr are now residing on the weekends and the awesome Andi Durrant is still going strong on Friday and Saturday nights from 11pm for those of you who like to hear your tunes in the mix with some great international guests too. Make sure you check out the new guy’s and girls on the all new Capital line up. Oh, I almost forgot. If you were ever a Dave Kelly fan he’s back on the radio on Sunday through to Thursdays from 11pm. He’s fairly unique in his presenting style and cheeky too. Make sure you tune in to Capital on 105.1fm, DAB or online www.capitalfm.com
Right now you’ve been totally updated in the realms of radio lets get onto a topic I know masses about – Love. Yes, Valentines Day is an annual event that makes some people scream and others cream. Many say that it’s the romantic anti climax of the year! Where as others see it as an opportunity to be flash, impress or ultimately woo. It’s a great time if you want to woo someone, let them know you fancy them, but for true lovers there is a lot of pressure to come up with something romantic and different. Of course you can’t beat flowers, but as nice as they are they don’t last the week. Chocolates are always a girl’s best friend if you can’t afford real diamonds or even diamonique. Talking of chocolates – have you ever tried the chocs in Hotel Chocolat? Devine. When I first heard the name Hotel Chocolat, I was eager to make a reservation but apparently they don’t do room service or even rooms - just chocolate. And what wonderful chocolate it is. I got bar of purist recently – not for the light hearted, but they do say dark chocolate is better for you. A piece of jewellery can be nice but expensive. Having said that The Bird Yard, opposite the Duck and Drake pub is the only stockist in Leeds of cheeky jewellery creators, Tatty Devine favoured by the likes of Kate Moss. Tatty Devine’s collection is very cool and very affordable. I love the name necklace and the cat bangles. If you go for underwear – then there’s always the chance you’ll get the wrong size or style. Although if you do have access to her knickers drawer, you could always check the size beforehand or even take some as an example, well maybe not the knickers.
She probably wouldn’t thank you for that! Nor would your partner be very happy if you showed a semi naked picture of her to the shop assistant via your iPhone. This is not a good way to assess her potential size. Nor is lining up all the sales staff in Agent Provocateur, M&S or La Senza and asking to cop a feel as you think this is the only way you’ll be able to remember what size she might be. I think you could even get arrested for that. No, I think that the best thing you can do on Valentines is to spend time with your other half, not money on an empty gift. One of the best Valentines, no in fact the best Valentines I ever had was when my husband created a restaurant in our kitchen. For one night only he was Chef Jacques Kelly and his make believe eatery was called Eighteen the Mount (that’s not rude by the way – it was our address at the time) Complete with printed menu I was treated to a fantastic meal ending with some fresh strawberries dipped in dark chocolate. Good times.
Ooh – I’ve just realised that I’ve not really mentioned any gift ideas for the guys. What am I like? I am always thinking about the ladies. What do you give a guy at Valentines? Any ideas? Yeah I know – and it doesn’t cost a thing if you know what I mean…..Well if he gives you flowers and chocolates it’s the least you can do in return!
Bye for now and keep it Capital, alright. xx
Issue 49:
"A - a - choo! Boo!"
Cough…Cough. A – a – choo! Boo! I think I’ve caught the dreaded man flu. How can I have the man flu when I’m clearly a woman?
Well, I suspect my son gave it to me as he’s been suffering with the boy flu and my efforts to nurse him have resulted in me now contracting the much stronger adult version – hence I have man flu. My symptoms?
Well, as we all know – ‘Man flu’ is a much stronger strain of the common cold and as any man will tell you, this form of cold can be life threatening! I’m not exaggerating I feel like poo, but this article won’t write itself. So rather than wallowing in self pity I thought I should soldier on, resulting in future comments like, ‘What a trooper!” And, “She wrote that while terribly ill you know.” Yes it has to be said winter is well and truly here.
The abundance of snow and freezing temperatures more than suggests that, but it shouldn’t stop one from getting out and about. The annual German market is an ideal place to visit if you‘re looking for a winter warmer.
Whether it’s a portion of spicy hot sausage washed down with a litre of beer or some goulash and mulled wine, or even just a festive gift, if you’ve still not been there – where have you been? At home? What have I told you about staying in! I had the in-laws staying recently all the way from Somerset and they loved the festive vibe in Millennium square. Well they are partial to a bit German sausage (insert joke here).
I think the only thing that spoils the ambiance is the money grabbing stalls that don’t really fit in there. For example, why not ‘hook’ an ‘item’ in an attempt to win a giant stuffed tiger almost as big as the one which resides in the nearby and fantastic City of Leeds Museum? I’ll tell you why not – because if you actually wanted to win a giant tiger you would have to play 12 times!!! Resulting in you spending thirty quid! And the woman wasn’t German either. It’s very hard to explain to a 4 year old why he hasn’t won the stuffed animal he was hoping for and has received a much smaller bit of tat instead. The carousel rocks though, well actually it spins at quite a pace. Most exhilarating! If you don’t manage to visit the market this year then make a point of going in Xmas 2011.
In my last column I talked about having my feet nibbled by fish and promised you an update. It seems that there are other beauty salons offering this radical treatment in Leeds too, such as Aqua Preena at the back of House of Fraser and I can thoroughly recommend it, but I have to say it’s a pretty weird sensation and not for those who don’t like having their feet interfered with. I’m one of those people who have really ticklish feet and in order to insert my feet into a tank full of ‘Gary’s a Roofer’ fish I had to have my knees firmly held down, resulting in a lot of noise from me.
By the way the fish used in this organic pedicure are actually called Garra Rufa, but I think Gary’s a Roofer is much more fun way to remember. Once I got over the initial freaky sensation of having 250 little bleeders sucking the dead skin off of my feet, it actually became quite pleasant.
But nothing like the bubbles in a regular foot spa which is what they tell you the sensation will emulate. But then again, I am pretty sensitive in the foot department. Would I do it again? Hell yeah! I have to say that my plates of meat came up a treat. Noticeably softer. At ten quid for 15 minutes,- it's a snip - go on treat yourself!
When you are next in the Light, especially if you are dining in the company of fussy eaters or those that just can’t make their minds up, check out ‘Red Hot World Buffet and Bar’. There is something for everyone whether you like Indian, Chinese, Thai, Italian or even Mexican, all members of your party will be satisfied.
The place is pretty lavish looking too for an all you can eat eatery and dinner prices start from £7.99 – which is not bad for a starter, main and pudding. I recommend you give it a whirl next time a big group of you are debating what style of food to eat.
And finally – as I mentioned last time, Galaxy is getting a new name in the New Year. Hirsty, Danny and I will still be doing the breakfast show on the all new ‘Capital Yorkshire’. We’ll be on exactly the same frequency if you listen on FM (105.1), but remember to search for ‘Capital’ in the New Year if you listen on DAB or the internet.
R.I.P Galaxy – I loved you well.
Happy New Year to all xxx

A is for Anthony’s! Having not entered the Corn Exchange for quite some time I was in for a pleasant surprise.
I had forgotten just how incredibly stunning the building is and also that as a destination it still has much to offer, especially in the eating department. In the underbelly of the Corn Exchange is ‘Piazza’, Anthony’s latest eatery adding to his ever growing tasty empire including his Patisserie in the Victoria Quarter, and his restaurant within Flannels on Boar Lane. I enjoyed a luscious lunch at Piazza and felt that finally the basement in the Corn exchange actually works to its full potential. The restaurant offers fine dining, private dining and even a cheaper café type option serving winter staples such as pie and mash. Not content with offering 2 different eating options, the space also boasts a take away pie shop, a deli, a chocolate shop, cake shop and bakery! It’s an ideal place to get a bite to eat whilst out doing the dreaded Christmas shopping. I know I mentioned the C word, but having discovered that I can now gorge myself on pie and peas in the lovely ambiance of the Corn Exchange, the challenge of keeping my mood mellow and the reward of some extra calories in the form of pie is helping me to a least start thinking about getting myself more organised this year.
A is also for ‘Appy Feet’ – now I’ve not tried this yet but by all accounts Appy feet offers the ultimate organic pedicure and with all the extra footwork ahead and what with the parties and traipsing round the shops its good to give your feet a little extra attention. Appy Feet has arrived in Leeds and is currently residing in the Light on the Headrow. Apparently you have to submerge your feet in some water and instead of a beautician filing your dead skin away they let fish do it. These fish love your dead skin, not the healthy stuff. Now I don’t know the science behind this but if I can stand the tickly sensation I’m willing to give it a go. I wonder if you have to remove your nail polish first? What kind of fish do they use? Surely not piranhas. So many questions – for a more scientific explanation check out their website
www.appyfeet.co.uk it could make a good Christmas gift for someone. I’ll let you know how I get on.
B is for ‘Bird Yard’ my new fashion Mecca. With the party season creeping up on us we all need that special little number, that unique unusual dress that nobody else has got. Why not try vintage? I just love clothes from the past – I think my favourite era would have to be the 70’s but I’ve been known to wear pretty much anything as long as I can work it. Bird Yard is bursting with fabulous vintage clothes, bric a brac, music and oodles of style. It’s situated near the market opposite the Duck and Drake pub and offers a variety of loveliness on 3 floors. It’s a bit of collective vibe as young designers are selling new pieces, hats and accessories alongside the vintage clobber. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love the high street but we need a good dollop of the quirky shops too, it makes shopping more interesting. So next time you’re round that part of town, do bob in and I promise you’ll find something amazing, a one off. The way I look at it is – some of these clothes have already lasted 30, maybe even 40 years so they’re capable of lasting a few more.
And finally, C is for Capital. I have an announcement to make - from early January 2011 Galaxy will be known as ‘Capital’. It’s an exciting time as the Capital name has so much heritage attached to it. Me and my boys, Hirsty and Danny will be launching Capital Yorkshire and we can’t wait! We’ll be banging out the hits you love and talking our usual bobbins! New Year, New name – Bring it on! xxx

"Take it easy sleazy"
Hello to everyone who attended the ‘Top of the Shop Awards’ at Oceana.
It’s an event I have hosted for the past 4 years and I always enjoy it. This year, Victoria Quarter is celebrating their 20th anniversary, so they splashed out an extra fifty quid to secure the wit and talents of Mr Daniel Thomas Oakes to present the awards alongside me. Congratulations to all the winners, which included Karen Millen, Ted Baker, Kurt Geiger, Links of London and of course, Harvey Nichols, who always do well due to their incredible customer service. Many thanks also to John Bade, the centre director and his right hand woman, Nicola Hanson for inviting me to their celebration once again.
Talking of the Victoria Quarter, I recently enjoyed an in store facial at Space NK and loved every minute. It was unusual to have a treatment in store as opposed to a dinky treatment room with the latest pan pipe classics blaring out in the background. Seriously, that music has absolutely no relaxing properties. In fact I would say that it has the exact opposite effect…. anyway, I digress. What I wanted to say is that the ladies in Space NK really know their stuff and by having an in store facial you get the chance to try before you buy. Hayley gave me an amazing facial and was a truly charismatic and entertaining individual. She used Eve Lon products on my boat race and pretty much polished my face with a giant electric toothbrush! I kid you not! Its official name is a Clarisonic and comes with 3 attachments, so you can even use it on your body too. It was the ultimate deep-cleanse and left my skin looking bright with a youthful glow about it. To top things off, she moisturised my face with some kind of snake serum – yeah, you read that right, Glamoxy snake serum by Rodial. It’s not from a real snake. It is extracted from a plant that emulates the serum and is very similar to the venom of a snake. It instantly freezes and lifts your face, while plumping out the wrinkles. Anyway, cheers Ladies, I’ll be bobbing back when I have some spare cash to splash.
Money has been really tight this year due to all kinds of reasons. But with my little boy starting school this month, things should vastly improve on the old money front as I’ll no longer have to pay for childcare – yippee! According to a recent article I read, the cost of childcare in this country is the highest in Europe. We pay nearly four times as much as the Germans and three times that of France! Outrageous! It’s tough enough being a working mum without being penalised for doing so. Ah well – I guess he will move out….eventually. As long as I keep giving him the best I can he may even provide me and his dad with a good nursing home in the future. Here’s to hoping!
And finally, watch out for me during Leeds Loves Shopping, which takes place in various shops, high streets and venues across our city centre from the 14th to the 24th October. Can’t wait to get involved with that – bring on the dresses! In the meantime, if you want your ears infecting with utter nonk, tune into me, Hirsty and Danny on Galaxy radio when you wake up. Or if mornings are not your thing, checkout our free ‘Dosecast’ either at www.Galaxyfm.com or on iTunes.

“Ah the Nostalgia”
Having had 2 weeks of R&R from the breakfast show on Galaxy I find myself with an abundance of stuff to write about. Where to start? Well – The newly refurbed Living Room on Greek Street deserves a mention. I was invited there for dinner and cocktails to celebrate The Living Rooms new look and had a really good time. The biggest changes made have got to be to the Mosquito club in the basement which has been given a total re jig, alongside the all new pristine white VIP area up top. The music was brilliant with the likes of Bonar Bradbery selecting and a live set from Cleve aka ‘Reverend Funky but Chunky’ – who invited me to sing alongside him, which I loved! I sang a bit of ‘Fever’ if I remember correctly. I recollect some applause notably from the one and only Suzanne Shaw (formerly of Hearsay, Strictly Come Ice Dancing, now on Emmerdale and married to JK off of JK and Joel – Do you think her hubby will mind her fraternizing with the competition? Hope not.) Mind you, we’d all had a few too many sweet sherrys so I can only hope that it was marginally in tune. I keep bumping into Suzanne Shaw lately – our paths crossed initially at a Fashion TV event at Alea Casino with a catwalk show featuring some Victoria’s Secret models – can’t possibly understand why Hirsty and Danny (my breakfast boys) wanted to attend that event??
In the warm weather there’s no better place to enjoy a white wine spritzer, than down at Oracle, Brewery Wharf. My other half Jacob was invited to play at Throwback last month, the best night in Leeds for Nu Disco. He was there to mark the launch of his latest venture – Eclectic Avenue Records or E.A.R for short. If you are into your vinyl then E.A.R should be right up your street. The aim of the label is simply to put out the finest sounds around from nu disco to re-edits. It’s all very tasty stuff. Try HYPERLINK "http://www.junorecords.co.uk" www.junorecords.co.uk who flogging the first release, ‘Juicy’ quicker than they can restock it! Long live vinyl!
If you’ve never ventured down Brewery Wharf, namely Oracle – do so especially during these summer months as there’s an ample terraced area by the river Aire to chill, party and generally people watch. Oracle isn’t the only place on offer, as I popped down to my hubby’s launch party to show a bit of support, with our 4 year old son (it started at 5pm – and he was only drinking apple juice before any of you complain and think me a bad mother) anyway - we ate the most delicious tapas at Azucar and Rudi B was impeccably behaved and stunned onlookers as he tucked into olives and anchovies with gusto and then danced and leapt about his urban playground in bright green ear defenders – he is so cute.
One of the great things about having kids is that you can legitimately see films aimed at the younger market without feeling like a total weirdo. Come on own up, who’s borrowed a kid for the afternoon in order to check out the latest Shrek? Well, Shrek 4 may have been a bit of an anticlimax for the grown ups but Toy Story 3 is as good if not better than its two predecessors. I took our lad to see it at the Cottage Road Cinema off the Otley road in Headingley, I believe it to be the oldest cinema in Leeds and one of the last few independent cinemas left. The big multiplexes are fine but, for small children it can all be a bit too loud and intimidating. It took me back to when I was a lass and I used to go to a local cinema in Armley with my friend Ruby, for the Saturday matinee action – intervals included. Ah the nostalgia. I’m showing my age now – better stop typing now.
Finally, if you’re going to Leeds’ Gay Pride on the 1st August, have a brilliant time and of course a safe time. Take care and remember to listen to me, Hirsty and Danny, week days when you wake up. xxx

I'm Blonde again
Ladies and gentlemen, I have an announcement to make to all non believers. Heaven truly exists here on our very planet earth and you may have walked right past it without even realising. Yes – you may have to take a bus or a short taxi ride out of the town centre to Chapel Allerton (or as some like to say – ‘The Village’) to praise at its almighty alter. What am I blathering on about? I’m talking about the wonder that is ‘The Sunshine Bakery’ – words don’t even come close to the kind of ecstasy a place like this can conjure. Seriously, if you are around Chapel A you simply must sample the best cakes ever! I can’t enthuse about the place enough, and thankfully I don’t live in LS7 anymore as I would be having some serious weight issues living opposite this place. No. 182 Harrogate Road has got to be the gateway to heaven, if there is one. It looks like a vintage style boutique from the outside, but within its four walls hides the secret of true happiness. Cake...
Yes people, I have long held the belief that the secret of total happiness is cake. If only they could produce one with all of the flavour and none of the calories. Now, there’s a challenge for chef and head honcho, David Bennett, the man behind the most divine cakes I have ever tasted - a guilt free cake? Please? Having said that, on the many occasions I have indulged in his sweet treats I’ve felt no guilt whatsoever, only pure unadulterated pleasure. With its mismatched crockery, fresh breads and old school patisserie vibe this is a winning establishment. I took a friend in recently who needed a little R&R and for a more than reasonable five British pounds we enjoyed a seemingly bottomless pot of tea, with chintzy china cups and saucers and a chocolate cupcake each to die for. Forget afternoon tea at The Ritz, the Sunshine Bakery is what I’m talking about. Go on – spoil yourself!
Did I mention – I’m blonde again? I have the guys and gals at ‘CRC’ to thank for this. Cutting Room Creative have been looking after my hair for quite some time now and they even trim my son’s too. How many four year olds have award winning colour specialists fighting to do their hair?
I’ve got trouble on my hands with that one! I suppose the burning question is do blondes have more fun? Well, I have been blonde before about five years ago and I ended up with child – say no more. If you’ve not checked out the city branch of Cutting Room, I think it used to be an ‘Argos’, then make an appointment today. Whether it’s a colour or a quick trim or even a complete overhaul of your look the folk at Cutting Room Creative really are top of their game. Having your hair done really does fill you with a renewed confidence, so if you’re feeling a bit ‘down on your look’ or feel like your image is a bit dated, see the guys at CRC. They don’t just deal with hair, they can help you reinvent yourself and create a whole new you if you decide to have a style/image consultation. This not only deals with your barnet but your overall style from head to toe.
During the hour and a half session you will be advised on everything from your hair style to the best clothes you should be wearing for your body shape and even the right colours and types of fabrics to best suit your skin type. You end up with what can only be described as a tailor made mood board for decorating yourself. Now that’s service! Consultation services like this can help you to be daring enough to go for a total image transformation or simply help you consolidate your style with much more assurance. For more info on services go to:

Got to go now, but remember you can listen to me and my boys every weekday morning when you get up on Galaxy. Toodle pip! xx

Where to Begin?...
I have so much to tell you this month that I hardly know where to begin! Firstly, I’ve been such a busy girl and have proved myself to be a bit of a domestic goddess. I surprised both myself and my colleagues by hosting a fabulous fancy dress birthday party for my four year old, Rudi B. I baked, made stripy jellies, pass the parcelled and even made myself a little zebra costume to match my son’s special outfit. After four years of having the little ‘Rudester’ I finally feel happy and relaxed about motherhood and I think I’m doing ok at it – at last! Talking of my four year old,
I recently dined at ‘Gaucho’, Leeds’ latest eatery. When I say ‘eatery’ that’s a bit of an understatement. It’s an Argentinean steak restaurant and the décor is pretty opulent to say the least – oh and did I mention the mammoth amount of white leather? White leather, children and felt tips just don’t mix! So, as I was saying, my boy had never witnessed such a decadent establishment (this was no Wagamamas) and he was a little overwhelmed by the plushness of the place and especially the chandeliers and mirrored ceilings … that element was a bit too much for him, but once he was settled and they brought our food he calmed down, unlike me.
I was in a state of anxiety throughout the meal afraid that my son would somehow damage this moviesque type environment. Having said that, the staff were excellent and put me at ease, or maybe it was the wine that did that. Everyone working at Gaucho seemed well informed about what they were flogging and could talk confidently about the different cuts of meat on offer. It’s a carnivores’ dream, although there is a fine selection of fish on offer, especially among the starters, you can eat Ceviches or Tiraditos! What are Ceviches and Tiraditos? I can only describe them to be a bit like tapas or sushi but with a Peruvian twist. Fresh tuna, scallops and salmon served with tantalising dressings – slurp! You might need to save up for a while before you go, but believe me you are in for a total dining experience. They also have a private dining area on offer which seems to be all the rage these days. www.gauchorestaurants.co.uk
Another fantastic discovery for me has to be ‘The Wet Spot’ a monthly burlesque night downstairs in ‘The Wardrobe’. Now, my friend Jeremy has been desperate to get me down to this night for ages and back in April I finally made it and I’ve got to say that this is the best club night I’ve been to in years! A big statement I know but it has to be said. I applaud the team who put this night on for being bold, daring and having the courage to put on an exciting monthly event that no other night in Leeds currently offers. It reminded me of when I first started to go out in Leeds in the early nineties to a club called The Kit Kat and later went on to work for it.
There was a real buzz of excitement and people really went to town with the way they looked and dressed with flawless make up and hair. It felt like a real occasion and I can’t wait to go again! I paid a tenner to get in, which might seem a bit steep, but worth every penny for the unique and varied entertainment on offer. Putting on nights like this doesn’t come cheap so I’m more than happy to pay a bit more. If you are reading this thinking – what is burlesque? Then this might not be the night for you. For more info www.thewetspotleeds.co.uk
Ooo – I almost forgot - they do a monthly raffle at ‘The Wet Spot’ where you can win a variety of prizes, including the star prize – a Vivien of Holloway 50s polka dot dress available from Rose & Co in the Victoria Quarter. Something I have longingly looked at in the shop window. Well, I thought I’ll buy a couple of tickets and guess what? I only went and won it! I’m still in shock now as I never win anything!
And remember that there are lots of chances to win stuff with Galaxy (seamless transition) You might be too late to enter ‘Stylehunt’ our competition to find the UK’s most stylish female, with a trip to New York on offer and £5,000 to spend on a new wardrobe, but keep checking online for line up/show info and further chances to win big! Go online to www.galaxyfm.com
Take it easy and remember you can hear me and my boys on ‘Hirsty’s Daily Dose’, weekdays when you wake up and at the weekend on ‘Back to JoJo’s’ (Sunday mornings from 2am – 6am)
Ciao for now xx

Roll on Spring Roll on summer...
I’ve had enough of this cold weather. I don’t know about you but I’m ready to switch off my heating and put my hot water bottle away. All the extra money I’ve had to spend on heating my house has left me strapped for cash with little left for frivolities. I’m currently dreaming of drinking ice cold beers in the glorious sunshine and of hanging out at music festivals.
Talking of which, after attending the Limetree Festival for the last 2 years running, this year I have been cordially invited to attend as a DJ. If you’ve never been to a festival before due to the fear of travelling, queuing, port-a-loos and the dreaded airbed and camping combo then this could be for you. It’s held in a picturesque bit of country side in Grewelthorpe, Ripon (don’t be put off by the name). It’s only roughly 20 miles from Leeds city centre, so distance is not a problem.
And if you don’t have a car you can always catch the number 36 bus directly to Ripon. You could even go via Betty’s tea room in Harrogate for some cucumber sandwiches, a cuppa tea and a cheeky cream bun. And if that wasn’t incentive enough last year you didn’t even need to pack a tent as they had ready pitched canvas ones you could hire. What about showers? Yes – you can even have one of them if you must but a packet of baby wipes should suffice. This year’s festival takes place on the August bank holiday (27th – 29th) for further ticket and line up information checkout www.limetreefestival.co.uk
For those lucky enough to be around on Friday 12th March, there was a free party… ‘The Don’ came to Leeds! Who? Don Letts – he’s a film maker, DJ and all round dread locked Dude. For those of you who have no idea who I am talking about let me fill you in. In a nutshell this guy is credited with bringing reggae and punk rock music together during the original outbreak of punk in England.
Bands from that era such as the Sex Pistols and The Clash had yet to record any tunes so there weren’t many punk tracks about at the start of this new genre, therefore Don played loads of reggae and dub records at the Roxy night club in London where loads of like minded punks congregated. It is said that Don’s style of music and disc jockeying directly influenced the scene in many ways. During this time he went on to document the punk movement by making his first ever film ‘The Punk Movie’ (1978) and he has since made many other films.
On top of that he was in 80’s band Big Audio Dynamite also known by many as the acronym ‘BAD’ with Mick Jones and knew Bob Marley personally. Need I say anymore? I couldn’t wait to meet him and introduce him to my Dad – he’ll be well impressed. The event took place at Eclectic Avenue (which happens every Friday) at the Rock Bar on Call Lane.. You can still check Don out on his weekly radio show on BBC6 Music, Saturday night 11pm – 12.
Then when you’ve finished change channels and listen to my weekend show on Galaxy every Sunday morning called ‘Back to JoJo’s’ from 2am to 6am – might as well give myself a plug too. Don’t want to get done off my management for mentioning the BBC and not the station I work for – which reminds me, did you catch me on telly at the beginning of March on the BBC’s Inside Out programme? They did a fab piece all about the legendary house club ‘Back to Basic’s’ which celebrated it’s 18th year last November and still has masses of revellers through it’s door every week. 18 years – who‘d of thought it would have lasted that long. Nice one boys!
See you next month and remember I’m always on Galaxy as part of the breakfast show with Hirsty and Danny when you wake up. I practically live on the wireless these days.

Let the festive feelings begin...
Aye up! Exciting times! This article was written on my very own sexy Samsung netbook a Christmas present to myself. Ridiculous as it sounds but I’ve never owned a computer of my own. I’ve always shared with partners over the years and they have always hogged the usage. I can’t see my husband wanting to go on this device as it is white with a pearl effect, very cute and very girly – ideal for me and fits perfectly into my handbag. I got it from www.ebuyer.com and it has totally transformed my whole existence. And now my husband doesn’t have to get all paranoid every time I use his precious Mac! Or have to delete any of the dodgy history on it. Hope Santa brings you one this Christmas and if not, pick one up in the New Year and gift wrap it to yourself. I used to be a complete technophobe, which might seem strange for someone who works in a radio station that resembles something off of Star Trek, but with an overwhelming choice of gadgets and gizmos available it’s easy to feel intimidated. Yes 2009 has definitely been a technological journey of discovery for me. I even have a Facebook account which I never thought would happen (I didn’t think I had the time or the inclination - very addictive) and an iphone! My close friends are shocked at the new technologically fearless me. Don’t get me wrong I’m no expert but I now have more than enough skills and confidence to navigate my way round. Oh gosh – I’ve turned into a computer nerd. Geekdom is calling!
Obviously I don’t have much free time now I’m a fully fledged Facebooker but I have managed to get myself out of late and Leeds has a couple of new additions on the bar front. One being ‘District’ near Ace Clothing and the other being ‘The Rock Bar’ on Call Lane recently opened by the legendary Tony Hannon of Up Your Ronson\MTV parties in Ibiza fame. My husband Jake has started a new Friday night down there called ‘Eclectic Avenue’ (awesome name) playing all the amazing music we play on ‘Back to JoJo’s’, my weekend show on Galaxy. So if you fancy listening to some truly assorted music make sure you go down to get down! It’s free to get in and in the daytime they specialise in the food of gods! No, not lobster or caviar but good old fashioned cheese on toast including halloumi, dolcelatte and good old fashioned cheddar – slurp. It’s simple. It’s the future! Keep an eye out for some appearances from me at ‘The Rock Bar’ as it’s our intention to do some ‘Back to JoJo’s’ monthly parties there in the new year. If you’ve never listened to my weekend show on Galaxy, then I’ll understand as it is on at quite an anti-social time – 2am to 6am on Sunday mornings. But if you have Sky you can Skyplus it! Check me and technology again! Also keep checking online as Galaxy is to install a listen again facility on the website meaning that you won’t have to be completely nocturnal to listen to Galaxy’s brilliant weekend output. You’ll be able to listen at your leisure - happy days! That’s ww.galaxyfm.com. Obviously I’m still doing the breakfast show alongside Hirsty and Danny, Monday to Friday when you wake up, but I do like to moonlight of a weekend with numerous others including ‘The Haggis Horns’ who appear with me and my better half this Chrimbob on ‘Back to JoJo’s’ Christmas special (27th December to hear this show – but if you are reading this in the new year you’ll have missed it!).
One more quick thing on the food front, I recently dined at the multi-award winning Chino Latino after tons of recommendations and I was blown away by the fantastic pan Asian menu in particular the beef salad. Yes salad never tasted so good! It’s quite pricey but worth every penny and ideal for an anniversary or celebration. Anyway – enough chat from me I need to get on with my sewing. I’ve just learnt how to use a sewing machine and am planning on making a lot of gifts this Christmas including a zebra costume for my three year old son who is obsessed with the monochrome creatures. And if any of my friends or family are reading this – I would like some jewellery for Christmas from Links of London in the Victoria Quarter. They have some fantastic pieces in there especially the DJ range, which features pendants of solid silver cassettes, jack plugs and even a volume knob…hint, hint...Have a great Christmas and even better new year and don’t forget you can download our breakfast show podcast for free from Galaxyfm.com or subscribe to it off of iTunes, just search for Hirsty’s Daily Dose – simple to do and it’ll fill some space on that new ipod you received this Christmas.

Hey up my Galaxy people!
Have you checked out my new show on the Galaxy Weekend yet? If not, why not?! I’m still on in the mornings when you wake up but now I’ve been given the opportunity to speak to the night people too. The show’s called ‘Back to JoJo’s’ and is on every Sunday morning from 2am after the massive Hed Kandi show with David Dunne. It’s an eclectic show with an after party vibe, so next time you’re up around that time give it a listen. The show is aimed at nocturnal people with an open mind to music with plenty of guests and silliness! Try it you might like it...
Right – well that’s my plug done, now to the main course. Have you visited the brand new City Inn Hotel down the dark arches? Wow! It sounds a bit low budget from its name but that is far from what it is in actual reality. City Inns are in all the major cities in the UK and have excellent facilities for leisure or business guests: iMac computers, complimentary Wi-Fi, Skype, Sky, luxurious linen, power showers and 24-hour room service. Check me – I sound like the flippin’ brochure. The restaurant is light and airy with alfresco dining available by the canal. Can I recommend the prawn cocktail with giant tempura prawns, delicious! If you can’t justify a stay at the hotel then you must at the very least visit the bar on the 13th floor with wrap around terrace and panoramic views. Sip a cocktail while soaking in Leeds’ blade runner-esque skyline. I jest, but it is pretty impressive and I do believe that once the masses discover it they’ll be knocking people back. There’s a great list of tipples on offer. I was feeling under the weather on my visit and the bartender made me a drink with medicinal qualities – an ‘Amaretto Sour’, lots of vitamin C in that. Well tasty! It made me feel much better.
Ah well - make sure you listen to Galaxy when you wake up and listen to our ‘Dose Cast’ available for free to download on the Galaxy website www.galaxyfm.com or iTunes – it’s full of the stuff we can’t say on the radio! If you are easily offended I wouldn’t bother - ciao for now xx

God Bless the Cafe!
Having moved house AGAIN, life has left me little time to go out and enjoy myself. Life has been filled with packing boxes, selotape and lifting – Joy! You know what it’s like when you first move, you can barely find the cooker let alone cook on it, so I have relied on eating out a lot.
Well – when I say eating out everyone assumes it would be fancy restaurants but it’s more like ‘cafés’, namely the ones across the bridge from where I work at Galaxy towers. If you’ve never ventured passed the Town Hall toward the court, you are missing out on a magnificent array of eateries without which most of my colleagues would starve or be seriously malnourished. God bless the cafés on Great George Street! It’s perfectly located for my work place but maybe a bit too far from yours. Why not take a longer lunch? Think of all the calories you’d burn walking to and from Great George Street. You could have that extra piece of cake!
Firstly on my guided tour of ‘Frequently Frequented Fooderies’, I would like to big up ‘La Cascade’ the first decent café to appear on the strip a good twelve years ago. It sells sexy food with Mediterranean vibe. Ciabatta with roasted veg, tabouli and even a sandwich named after one of my former producers – ’The Matt Special’, which was later renamed as the ‘Al Kelly Memorial sandwich’, who was another past producer, my favourite in fact. Long live Al Kelly! We seem to get through a lot of producers on our show. Can’t understand why? I’m mean we’re not at all high maintenance or diva-ish in anyway shape or form. It consists of a baguette with buttery chicken, melted cheese, pepperoni, jalapeño’s and special Cascada sauce. Yum. It’s a bit like a pizza butty and is pure filth but me and my boys love it!!! Next along Great George Street is ‘The Roast’ – self explanatory really. It provides brilliant butties and of course specialises in hot roast meat sandwiches, hence the name. I’m salivating now as I always do as I pass that place. It lures you in with its magnificent selection of hot roast meats all juicy and glistening in the window. Slurp. That last bit sounded almost erotic. I need to calm down. Hot roast beef with onions and lashings of English mustard. Get me one now! I think there’s another branch of’ ‘The Roast’ off Whitehall Road, Riverside if that’s any closer?
‘Café Centro’ is next on my walk to an ever expanding waistline and in my humble opinion, provides the best bacon and egg butties at a very reasonable two quid. Good for spuds too – with chilli and cheese being a favourite. Grain is next, run by a lovely fella called Giles. When it comes to soup and a sandwich, this is the place. Everyday they have a popular tomato based soup on offer, but if tomato is not your thing, then you can opt for an alternate offering of spicy parsnip or maybe a sweet corn number. The butties and salads rule too, but the best thing has got to be their cakes. OMG! The chocolate is amazing and don’t get me started on the lemon drizzle. They usually have some sample pieces of cake on the counter…I grab it them by the handful. I’m shameless me. Go on. You know you can’t resist. I’m drooling again. And finally – if me and my boys need something with a bit of a kick it has to be a chicken Pad Prik with rice from ‘Thai Cottage’. This is at the end of my route and offers a cheap and cheerful lunch menu with a starter and main for roughly £6 I think. I never get a starter, but I know that a main costs £5.25 – unless you want prawns then that’s extra.
Well all that talk of food has left me famished. Better nip over the bridge to get some fodder. What shall I have? Jacket spud? Soup? Sarnie? Oh – I’ll decide when I get over there.
Remember to tune into Galaxy when you wake up and also, don’t forget I’ve got a new show on the Galaxy Weekend Saturday night/Sunday morning. It’s called ‘Back to JoJo’s’.

Over a decade with Galaxy 105!
First up – Big news! After nearly 13 years of working here at Galaxy radio doing the breakfast show with numerous guys, (the last 7 years have been the best working with Hirsty and Danny, obviously I have to say that, but it is also true), the management have decided that they trust me enough to do a show on my own. Yes people, Saturday nights will never be quite the same again on Galaxy. I think that there’s a secret sweepstake in the office as to how long I’ll keep my show on the air, but I don’t care as I know it’s going to be brilliant! The Galaxy weekend is packed with coolness and great DJ’s such as Galaxy legend, Andi Durrant, Steve Sutherland and recently joined monthly residents, Tiesto, Paul Van Dyke and Tinchy Stryder!! I am now part of that line up and that makes me instantly cool!! So how on earth has ‘The JoJo’ got her own show on the Galaxy Weekend? It’s a mystery to me too, but I’m going to go with it for as long as I can get away with. The show is aptly named ‘Back to JoJo’s’ and is an eclectic compilation of sexy music. Everything from Hip Hop, House, Funk, Disco and even some Go-Go!! Imagine, you’ve been out on Saturday night and randomly get invited back to an after party at some crazy womans house, mine, then that’s the vibe of it. Basically, I have free reign for 4 hours every week to play what I want – get in!! Lots of special guests will be popping back to mine for plenty of fun and maybe a G&T or too! So remember to tune into Galaxy every Saturday/Sunday morning for a free party on the radio. The show starts a 2am and goes on until 6am – I say it’s a Saturday show because as far as I’m concerned it’s not Sunday until you’ve been to bed or are nursing a hangover with the aid of bacon butties! For more information about the entire Galaxy Weekend line up checkout www.galaxyfm.co.uk
I’ve been involved in some high profile fashion events lately including hosting a spectacular Gala Fashion Show for the first ever Yorkshire Fashion Week, held in Huddersfield – maybe next year it could be in Leeds, who knows? What I do know is that it was the brain wave of Bill Macbeth, who runs The Textiles Centre of Excellence. It makes total sense as this region is synonymous with the textiles industry. Everything is London, Paris and Milan and we have so many great colleges specialising in fashion including the Leeds College of Art and The Leeds Uni so why not showcase and celebrate it right here? Anyway, as usual I digress. Being involved in such stylish events, one needs to invest in some equally stylish frocks. So while out shopping in Leeds recently I stumbled across a splendid new shop in the Grand Arcade, which I know for some of you may be a bit too far off the beaten track, but it’s only a tad further than Primani, and, definitely worth a look. The shop is a vintage shop called ‘Up Staged’ and is run by a lovely lady called Lorna who is quite a character with a genuine passion for dresses. I ended up buying not just one dress, but two! Both were under £40 each. Bargain! One of them was from the 70’s – my favourite era and the other was a beaded number I believe to be from the 80’s. The way I see it is the clothes you buy second hand have already lasted 30 or 40 years so they are bound to last a lot longer than some of the clothes we buy new today. Honestly – check this shop out it’s packed with original garments and Lorna has plans to launch a classic/burlesque underwear section on the floor above. Apparently there is quite a scene and appetite for burlesque developing in Leeds – I shall investigate that further and get back to you!
That’s all for now – Remember to listen to me and my boys in the morning when you wake up and to me on Saturday’s when you get in! Bye! xxx

A day at the Office!
Leeds has everything a great city can offer, but what it doesn’t have is a Racecourse. Yes I know people say it’s a mugs game, but having recently had a day out at Doncaster Racecourse my opinion has changed massively. My Father is a bit of a gambling man and often when I ring him and ask him where he is, he’s in his local bookies, which he affectionately refers to as ‘the office’. But in his defence, going to the ‘office’ has afforded him several trips to the Caribbean. Anyway, as usual I digress, I took my father to the ‘actual’ races as a birthday present last month and what a gift it was! Not only did my dad get to place bets in the chaos and excitement of the racing arena, but he also received the privilege of being a guest judge alongside me, judging Miss South Yorkshire 2009 - sitting next to the current Miss England and Miss Ireland! Lucky Swine! Not bad for an old bloke eh? With initial betting trepidation I soon found myself in the swing of things and managed to get a decent win on an ‘OS’ (horse) called ‘Afrodisiac’. Not enough to retire on. I’m sensible you see and was only making £2.50 each way bets – a term I now finally understand. The sport itself happens very quickly, like so many good things in life eh? But the excitement is enormous, especially if you’ve backed a winner and it requires little attention giving you more time to have a good laugh and socialise, maybe not for the professionals, but for a novice like me it was a good excuse to get dressed up and have a memorable day out. Talking of gambling, I recently hosted a ladies night at Alea Casino and met some women who work for MYA cosmetic surgery – ‘Make Yourself Amazing’ on Lisbon Street. They gave me a new insight into the world of Botox – a product I thought people used to diminish age, to fill in the cracks so to speak, oh contraire! Botox I am told should actually be used as a preventative measure. Yes people – if your face is unable to move, unable to make frowns or show emotion then you have less chance of creating wrinkles in the first place. Genius! I never thought of it like that. Mind you I can’t see me booking myself in for any Botox or a boob job just yet, but I’ll never say, never. They do offer a non surgical procedure called Microdermabrasion, and it was described to me as the ultimate in exfoliation and apparently it leaves your face feeling as soft as a baby’s bottom - so I might be up for trying one of them some day soon. For more information about MYA and the services they offer please visit www.mya.co.uk
