Leeds Rhinos show their support for our troops and veterans this Armed Forces Day.
Leeds Rhinos will be honouring our country’s finest at their second annual Armed Forces Day on June 24th. The event Coincides with their match at Headingley Carnegie Stadium against Bradford Bulls where there will be a match between teams made up of members of the Royal Navy and Royal Marines before the derby game.
The event will have a special place in the heart of Rhino’s head coach Brian McDermott who served in the first Gulf war as a marine. “I think it is fantastic that the club is hosting a day like this, especially to coincide with our game against Bradford. “There are so many personnel from across West Yorkshire who are serving their country and it is a great tribute to them that we can come together to show our appreciation to them.”
The military match sponsored by Hesco Baston (the Leeds based military supplies firm) will kick off at Headingley at 5.45pm, followed by the Rhinos versus Bulls at 8pm. To help raise money for the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity there will be collections held at the grounds for RNRMC which supports former naval personnel who are suffering hardship and also works to improve servicemen and women’s well being.

Raise Cash For Sick Children's Trust
Leeds Rhinos have revealed that the traditional Boxing Day clash against local rivals Wakefield Wildcats at Headingley Carnegie, kick off 11.30am, is to re-branded as the Festive Charity Trophy with a donation from every ticket sold going to The Sick Children's Trust.
A pound from every ticket sold will go to The Sick Children's Trust, which was founded in 1982 and provides high quality accommodation for families whose children are receiving hospital treatment for serious illness. In addition, the club will also be running their "Day to Remember" campaign, which has been successfully implemented for the last three World Club Challenge games at Elland Road. This allows companies to pledge funds to purchase discounted tickets which are then distributed to disadvantaged children across the city.
Leeds Rhinos star Rob Burrow was joined by Wakefield Trinity Wildcats Chief Executive James Elston along with Chris Rostron, the General Manager of the Leeds Rugby Foundation, at the launch along with families from Leeds and Wakefield who have benefited from the work done by The Sick Children's Trust.
Commenting on the initiative Leeds Rhinos Chief Executive said, "The Boxing Day fixture is always has a fantastic family atmosphere with many generations from the same family coming together to enjoy a morning at the rugby together. The decision to join up with Wakefield to help support the excellent work done by the Sick Children's Trust is a natural one and I am sure that supporters from both clubs will be pleased to know that they are making a donation to such a worthy cause at a tough time of year for all families who have children receiving treatment in hospital."
Tickets for the game are on sale now from both the Rhinos and Wakefield ticket office. Leeds Rhinos seat season ticket holders from the 2010 season will have their seat held until 5pm on Monday 6th December when any unsold tickets will go on general sale.
Leeds Rhinos adult and concession members will be able to gain a £2 discount across all ticket categories if purchase before Monday 6th December at 5pm. Junior tickets for Boxing Day start from just £5. Tickets can be purchased by calling 0871 423 1315 or online 24 hours a day at www.therhinos.co.uk/buytickets

Leeds Rhinos Player Profile: Matt Diskin
DOB 27th Jan 1982
Birthplace Dewsbury
Height 1.78 m (5' 10")
Weight 89 kg (14 st 0 lb)
Position Hooker
“You never fail until
you stop trying”
His early career highlight was as man of the match in the 2004 Grand Final success, however he matured over the intervening three years and was a linchpin of the side who returned to Championship glory in 2007.
That season he made 24 starts and scored four tries before missing just three games due to an elbow and hand injury the following year and was one of just seven players to win three Championships in with the Rhinos with the win over Saints at Old Trafford.
He showed his versatility as well, captaining the side in the absence of Kevin Sinfield and starting the game at Hull KR at loose forward. It was a big year for the former Dewsbury Moor amateur as he also graduated from Leeds Metropolitan University with a degree in Sports Science along with team mates Kevin Sinfield and Jamie Jones-Buchanan and coach Willie Poching.
2004 was a triumph for Matt and he proved his importance to the Rhinos squad. He missed just one game all season, against St Helens, which notably signalled the end of the Rhinos winning start to the Super League. Matt was Leeds’ top tackler that season, making 685 tackles and with 12 tries in the season was one of the stars of 2004.
In 2003 he captained England in the European Nations Cup when they defeated Russia 102-0 at Odsal. Diskin has grown to be one of the best hookers in Super League and this was recognised when he was selected to make his full Great Britain debut in the 2004 Tri Nations against New Zealand, which unfortunately resulted in Matt being taken off with a knee injury just 17 minutes into the game.
At the end of the 2006 season he joined five of his fellow Rhinos team mates for international duty in the England side who were undefeated in that year’s Federation Shield Tournament.
Matt's favourite food is Chinese, his childhood hero was Superman, his moto for any young player in the game is "You never fail until you stop trying".

Kevin Sinfield: DOB 12th Sep 1980
Birthplace Oldham
Height 1.83 m (6' 0")
Weight 95 kg (14 st 13 lb)

In 2008, whilst celebrating his testimonial season, Kevin was inspirational scoring seven of his sides points in the 11-4 win over Melbourne Storm that gave the Rhinos their second World Club Championship before scoring his 2000th point for the club in the Grand Final to give the club their first ever back to back Championship.
Kevin is now the second most prolific points scorer in Leeds’ 113 history, behind Lewis Jones, and in 2008 set another club record by scoring in 63 consecutive matches in all games and with points in 52 Super League games he also set a new Super League record.
In 2007 he was inspirational throughout and never failed to perform, becoming the first Rhino to ever score in every round of Super League with 113 goals.
His finest hour came in 2009 when he added the Harry Sunderland Award to his Player of the Season accolade with a commanding performance against St Helens.
Kevin has been part of the Rhinos squad for almost ten years and since making his debut in 1997 as a 16 year old, he has grown into an inspirational captain who has led the team to their most successful period in over thirty years.

Kevin Sinfield believes in victory at next month’s Gillete World Club Challenge
Leeds Rhinos captain Kevin Sinfield believes victory in next month’s Gillette World Club Challenge could provide the spur to the Engage Super League champions claiming a fourth successive title in 2010.
The Rhinos meet Australian champions Melbourne Storm at Elland Road on Sunday February 28 when the inspirational loose forward expects Leeds to make amends for their defeat by Manly in the 2009 World Club Challenge at the same venue.
After being beaten 28-20 by Manly, Leeds went off the boil by losing five of their next 10 games before recovering in time to complete an unprecedented hat-trick of Engage Super League titles.
“To get beat by Manly last year was a real disappointment for all of us so to have another crack at Melbourne is fantastic,” said Sinfield.
“That defeat to Manly hurt us a lot, probably more than we envisaged at the time. We went on a losing run and our form was poor for eight weeks after that but thankfully it came good in the end and we’ve got another crack now.”
Next month’s clash of the Engage Super League and NRL champions is a repeat of the 2008 World Club Challenge which saw the Rhinos run out 11-4 victors and Sinfield is hoping the British public get behind him and his team-mates to spur them on to victory at Elland Road.
“The talk between the boys has been all about Melbourne since we won the Grand Final,” said Sinfield.
“I’m sure it will be another bruising encounter and hopefully the Leeds public and British Super League will get behind us and we can put on a show.”
Sinfield is not underestimating a Melbourne team that contains the likes of Gillette Four Nations winners Greg Inglis, Billy Slater, Ryan Hoffmann and Cameron Smith, and believes that the four Engage Super League matches prior to meeting the NRL champions will prove pivotal to the destination of the Gillette World Club Challenge trophy.
“I’ve heard some of the talk from their camp recently and they’re certainly up for it which is great because we are as well,” said the 29-year old, who was one of England’s shining lights in last year’s Gillette Four Nations.
“The games before them in Super League are really important for us to get some combinations together and get back playing well together. It’s going to be a massive challenge.”
Sinfield is hoping for a change of fortunes when he returns to Elland Road for the first time since England’s Gillette Four Nations defeat. The England International said: “I really enjoyed the Four Nations and obviously the disappointment is that you don’t get to share some celebrations with a group of guys that worked really hard in an international arena.
“But it wasn’t to be, and to be back at Elland Road does hold some special memories for most of this group and hopefully we can create some more.”
Tickets for the Gillette World Club Challenge at Elland Road on Sunday February 28 (6.30) are now available with prices starting from £20, or £10 concessions.

Christmas with the Rhinos:
Rhinos fans in for a treat
this Christmas at Headingley Carnegie...
Leeds Rhinos fans are in for a treat this Boxing Day with a host of Rhinos stars running out for the Champions in the Cravendale Festive Challenge against Wakefield at Headingley Carnegie, kick off 11.30am. The fact that only four Rhinos are on duty with England during the Gillette Four Nations and Kylie Leuluai away with Samoa means that coach Brian McClennan will have the majority of the Grand Final winning squad to pick from for the annual clash with Wakefield.
New signing Brett Delaney will make his first appearance for the Rhinos whilst the likes of Rob Burrow, Carl Ablett, Ryan Bailey, Danny Buderus, Brent Webb, Scott Donald, Ali Lauitiiti, Luke Burgess and Ian Kirke could all feature on Boxing Day. For Rob Burrow it will mean his first festive outing since 2004 and the scrum half admits he is looking forward to it. “Boxing Day is a great occasion and I am looking forward to playing in it this year. The last few years I have been sat in the stand supporting the guys but it will be good to be involved this year. For a lot of us, Boxing Day was our first chance to show what we can do in the first team when we were youngsters and it is amazing to think what we have gone on to achieve as a group since then. I am looking forward to playing alongside Brett Delaney, it is always hard for a player when he comes into a new environment but hopefully getting a game under his belt early will help him settle in.”
This will be the sixth consecutive year that Leeds have met Wakefield in the Cravendale Festive Challenge with the Rhinos winning the first three and the Wildcats looking to level the series this year after back to back wins. Commenting on the game, Chief Executive Gary Hetherington said: “Unlike last year with the World Cup, there are only a handful of players who will miss the start of pre-season this year. Everyone else will begin pre-season at the end of the month and be available for Boxing Day with the exception of Keith Senior and Jamie Jones-Buchanan who had operations at the end of last season. Brian McClennan will have to assess the fitness of his players nearer the time but it certainly looks like an exciting line up at this stage.
“There will also be an opportunity for players like Jay Pitts, Kyle Amor and Michael Coady to show what they can do as they look to press their claims for a first team spot. Jay has won the last two Cravendale Festive Challenge games but with Wakefield so hopefully he will be lucky for us this time!” added Hetherington.

Never Say Die Attitude has been Key to Rhinos Successes!
Jamie Jones-Buchanan has described a never say die attitude in the Rhinos team as one of the reasons why they have been able to come from behind in their last games to secure victory. You can watch Leeds Rhinos live at Headingley Carnegie Stadium on Saturday 1st August Kick off 6.30pm. Tickets are £20 for adults and £12 for juniors. Contact the Box Office on 0871 423 1315 or visit www.therhinos.co.uk.
The Rhinos star believes this philosophy amongst the players has helped them in recent games and will give them strength when they face similar situations throughout the season.
Speaking to Rhinos TV at www.therhinos.co.uk Jamie said, “The spirit in the team is very good at the minute. That’s always part of our philosophy as a group, we’ve all grown up together from young kids and we all love each other. We blow up at each other on the pitch sometimes and it looks like we are all fighting and angry but that just adds to the passion. We’re all desperate to win and really keen. We’re greedy for it in a way, which is a good thing that has been proved in the last couple of games when we’ve probably not started or played most of the game the way we wanted to and we have had to scramble and work hard for it at the end. You know sometimes that happens in finals and in important games and if you know you’ve got the spirit to come back and score two tries in the dying minutes then that always carries you through and you get that never say die attitude.”
At the time of writing Leeds are yet to travel to the JJB stadium to face Wigan Warriors on Friday 24th July but they go off the back of a 24 – 14 win over Hull KR that at points in the game looked like it could go the other way, and after a last minute try secured them victory over Wakefield Wildcats at Belle Vue stadium. Leeds came back in the last 20 minutes of the game from a 30 – 16 deficit to Wakefield Wildcats with tries from Ali Lauitiiti and rob Burrow converted by skipper Kevin Sinfield and Lee Smith respectively, the Rhinos still trailed 30 – 28 in the final minutes of the game before a try from Scott Donald with less than a minute left of the game saw them secure a 30 – 32 victory.

A SUPER LEAGUE MAGIC WEEKEND
Nearly 60,000 fans enjoyed yet another superb spectacle as engage Super League’s Magic Weekend rolled in to Edinburgh delivering seven superb games and an action packed two days of fun for the whole family. An aggregate attendance of 59,749 watched the full round of engage Super League matches which were played at Murrayfield Stadium, Edinburgh.
Nigel Wood, the RFL’s Chief Executive, said: “Once again Rugby League fans have turned out in force to support their game and hopefully had a great weekend all round in the Scottish capital. I am sure they will have left a lasting impression on our hosts who have been extremely welcoming. Rugby League supporters are extremely passionate about their sport and they should be proud that very few sports could put on an event like this where 14 sets of supporters can mix together over one weekend whilst watching the sport they all love.
“The Magic Weekend is all about putting on a great showcase for supporters in a destination city and our partners in Scotland have been extremely supportive in putting on this great event enabling us to provide far more entertainment for the fans then ever before. Planning for next year’s Magic Weekend in Edinburgh will start straight away and the starting point will be to seek feedback from clubs and supporters so that in 2010 this event is even bigger and better.”
Scottish Rugby Chief Executive Gordon McKie praised the event’s success and announced he was looking forward to welcoming back the ‘Magic Weekend’ to Murrayfield in 12 month’s time.
McKie said: “We were extremely pleased to be able to host such a colourful and entertaining event with nearly 60,000 people enjoying the Scottish sunshine and a memorable weekend of Rugby League. We consider Murrayfield to be a premier European venue and it is encouraging to see so many newcomers to the stadium enjoy the facilities over the two days. We are proud of our blossoming relationship with RFL and our partners, EventScotland, VisitScotland and City of Edinburgh Council we look forward to building upon this year’s success when the event takes place here in 2010.”
It is estimated that one in 10 Magic Weekend attendees were from Scotland, a figure that the RFL’s Nigel Wood believes shows there is a real appetite north of the border for Rugby League.
Wood said: “Scotland’s performance in last year’s World Cup did a lot to raise awareness of Rugby League in this country and the fact that more than 6,000 Scots have attended this event will add to the momentum.
The media coverage in Scotland covering the Magic Weekend has been excellent and we are expanding our development team up here to turn the increased interest in the sport into more participants. And, who knows in years to come we may see a Scottish team playing in the Championship or Super League as a result of what we’ve started this year?”

Shadow Home Secretary visits Headingley
Shadow Home Secretary Chris Grayling has visited West Yorkshire. As part of the day, he went to Headingley Carnegie Stadium to see a project aimed at diverting young people from anti-social behaviour. Leeds Rugby Chief Executive Gary Hetherington and Leeds Rugby Foundation Chairman David Oxley explained about the importance of the Re-engage Project and heard about how it worked from those involved.
Chris Grayling said: “Anti-social behaviour is one of the issues that has a real impact on people’s lives. I was pleased to be able to hear about the great work being done by the Leeds Rugby Foundation.
“Initiatives like the Re-engage Project can help both those who suffer because of anti-social behaviour and those who, without this project, would be those causing problems.”
Chris Grayling was accompanied by Conservative Parliamentary Candidate for Leeds North West, Julia Mulligan. She added: “Projects like this can have a positive impact on lives right across Leeds and I am committed to supporting it now and in the future.”
